Integral Vision Solution

Throughout the years JAIMS has developed different kinds of vision systems. A few examples include the product inspection systems, e.g. Impeller Inspection, Lamp Holder Cement Inspection and Wire Loop inspection system, but also measurement (and control) systems e.g. Diamant Tool Measurement and Adjustment Photo Lithographic Mask.

Every vision problem needs a suitable solution. The Lamp Holder Cement Inspection is realized with a programmable digital camera because a relative simple problem needs a cheap and effective solution.
The Adjustment Photo Lithographic Mask project was a complex measure and control problem. Therefore it needs more vision and processing power. These two examples show the working range of JAIMS: from low cost to complex systems. From integrated vision systems on already running production equipment to stand alone turn key measuring and inspection apparatus.

Way of working

Almost every vision problem is unique and therefore deserves an unique solution. Of course several problem can be categorized in a specific group of vision inspection problems. Contour measurement using back light for instance is a category that has many similarities, so a standard set-up can do the job.
In cases specific features have to be measured or detected a unique vision set-up is required.
In those cases JAIMS makes use of a standard way of working:

  • Discuss the inspection or measurement problem of the customer. If a functional specification is not available a draft specification will be written down. During this discussion the product, production equipment and all relevant items will be discussed. Also, the environment in which the vision system has to operate will be discussed and it is also preferred to visit the future working place of the vision system. This visit is absolutely necessary when an inspection is a part of the production system or when the vision system has to work on the production equipment. All optical aspects of the product are relevant to get the most reliable solution.
  • Collect as many accepted and rejected products as possible, this is done by the customer and is a very important step. An inspection is based on these sets of products and even more important are the borderline products. Development, acceptation or rejection of the whole system depends on these product. A product that is completely out of range is also very important. With this information we try to get a complete as possible overview of all the defects that can occur.
  • When the inspection seems to be a complex one JAIMS does a proposition for a feasibility study. Within the laboratory of JAIMS an investigation for the best illumination is started by taking the required conditions in account.
    In case this vision system (optics, illumination and camera) has to be built into production equipment the development freedom is restricted. Calculations about inspection speed and accuracy will be made. Tube base Premature software is created for testing the created images to improve the ‘optical knowledge’ of the product and the effect disturbances on the detection.
  • An official offer is made by JAIMS containing all requirements and conditions. A master plan is also given including the activities of the customer if necessary. In case the customer wants to change some requirements, the consequences will be given.
  • After receiving an official order or a letter of intent, JAIMS starts the project. During the development progress meetings on regular basis are held to inform the customer and to receive the last details.
  • Installation and tests will be done as agreed in the offer. Fine tuning will be done on location during production or maintenance. Operating instructions and manuals are given if the system is running properly.
  • After a successful acceptance test and evaluation the project will formally be closed.


    During the guarantee time at least one evaluation meeting will be planed. The pictures given here show a pen inspection of the glass tube positioned on the production equipment between glass burners. this is shown in the first picture.   • The glass tube rotates on his position which makes sure several images are made during one rotation and every image will be processed. This vision inspection system checks the availability of all pens and measures the length of these pens.
    The long pens are slightly bended. The maximum bending is measured and the product is rejected if one of these measured values exceeds the limitation.
    The second picture shows the tube base, the last picture shows the image with one long pen out of the limits.
